Programme profile

Midwifery practice centres on the care of childbearing women during this important time in their lives. This involves working in partnership with women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period. Midwives aim to provide woman centred care which is sensitive to individual needs.

Until recently entry to midwifery has been only available to Registered General Nurses. This BSc Midwifery programme offers men, women, school leavers and mature applicants, the opportunity to become midwives without the need to first obtain a nursing qualification.

The programme aims to foster in the individual the knowledge, skills, attitudes and professional values for midwifery practice. On successful completion of the degree a graduate is eligible to apply for professional registration as a midwife (RM) with the Irish Nursing Board
